Hump Backed Green-wing Teal Rig
New Jersey
October 2025
Green Winged Teal are my favorite duck. We have a large migration of the species throughout New Jersey every fall and winter. They over winter in our large coastal estuaries by the thousands. They provide wonderful wing shooting throughout the long cold months. They are also excellent table fare. There is nothing better than sitting by a warm fire, with freshly killed teal roasting in the oven. As such, I am always experimenting with my patterns and styles for my Teal rig. The decoys shown on this page draw inspiration from the work of Clark Madara, (1883-1953) as well as early ward brothers decoys. I tried to combine elements of their turtle backed style, with a modern twist and my typical well blended Artist oil paint job. I was pleased with the way they turned out, and I will undoubtedly be making for for the hunting rig. The high heads show up well on the water, and the full body stander looks great on a dropping tide, poised on the edge of a mudflat. I hope you enjoy the pictures and please reach out if you would like me to make you one of these uniquely styled decoys.
